One of the common faults the grand Cherokee has is a oil leak thats starts from the steering rack.

The rack leak usually develops from either seals on the inner rack ends which can cause the oil to leak into the steering rack boots. When this happens the boots gradually fill up with oil and eventually leak out. This means that by the time the leak is evident the fault is quite serious and needs to be rectified as soon as possible. The other leak on the rack itself is on the input shaft or the steering column comes into the rack itself and or the large nut directly opposite it.(see image) . This has no boot over it so the leak is present almost as soon as it starts.
To rectify either of these we advise either a new or reconditioned rack.
Now for the fun part. Removing and replacing this steering rack requires the removal of the front differential unit. This is not something a DIY person should be getting involved in unless you are super confident with your skills.
Completely Remove the front diff unit out of the vehicle. This is needed to allow the rack to clear. it looks like you can get it out with out doing this. i can assure you, you can’t.
Once the diff is out the rack comes out very easily.
Obviously don’t allow the input shaft to turn casing clock spring faults.
Replace the rack and refill the system with oil. There are only two compatible oils on the market currently for the Jeep Steering system. We have covered these oils in this article here.
