There is a very common fault with the Hyundai I30 which is the plastic gear inside the steering motor failing. This issue is covered in an article we wrote which you can view by clicking here.
The second most common fault for these I30 steering components is the complete loss of power steering. The steering still works however it is very heavy and hard to turn the wheel. The cause for this is normally the complete failure of the electric steering motor.
This fault is not as common as the plastic gear failure however its super expensive. In this case you will require the replacement motor which Hyundai sells as a complete column for several thousand dollars.
The other option for this repair is top purchase a second hand column from a wreaking yard and swap the motors over. Our experience is the second hand option is around five hundred dollars. The catch is this is a relatively common fault so you are taking a risk with a second hand unit that it may fail in the near future.
The basic maths does suggest in most cases you are better of taking the risk with the second hand part.
Any reputable mechanic will be able to change the motor over in a around three or four hours. The column has to be removed and have the motors removed from the column.
Once the repair is carried out, the steering angle sensor will need to be reset.
it is highly advised that whilst this repair is happening to have the little plastic gear replaced as the the motor is apart anyway.
