CP4 HPFP Failure & Tear down

Globally Jeep and its parent company, Stellantis have recalled thousands of vehicles globally for a fuel pump failure on the CP4 Fuel pump which is fitted to the WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

This recall has taken several years to role out on Australia with no real urgency. The reason for this is that there is no known reports in our data base of this pump failing in Australia.

WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Pump recall.

The reason, we believe there are no known cases in Australia is a variation in the diesel fuels and subsequent additives put in Australian diesels fuel. These difference obviously contribute tot he fuel lubricating qualities ensuring that the CP4 remains well lubricated. The only difference being in instances where the pump has either been run dry or if the vehicle has been run with petrol and not diesel in the fuel system.

The image below shows one such case in Australia where the pump was run for an extended period of time with petrol in the fuel system preventing the pump from have adequate lubrication, grinding away the pump camshaft and roller lifter and resulting in filling the entire fuel system with a fine metal power which in turn will destroy the injectors.

After knowing about the recall and hearing about many failures in the USA and yet not seeing any in our store. We decided, out of curiosity to pull one apart, work out how they work and what possible need there would be for a recall. We filmed the process.
