In this video, we explain why GDL Automotive only supplies and installs genuine Jeep oil coolers, and why that decision matters for both us and our customers.
When we carry out a repair, we stand behind our work. That means providing a warranty on parts and labour. Using non-genuine oil coolers, particularly those sourced from online marketplaces like eBay, creates a serious liability issue. If an aftermarket unit fails and causes internal engine damage, we cannot warrant that repair or cover the resulting costs.
For that reason, we choose reliability and accountability over shortcuts.
Common Reasons Jeep Oil Coolers Fail
There are three main reasons we see oil coolers needing replacement on Jeep diesel platforms.
1. External Oil Leaks
The most common failure point is the oil cooler gasket. When this gasket degrades, oil begins leaking externally, often pooling in the engine valley. Left unchecked, this can lead to oil loss and further contamination.
2. Internal Gauze Blockage
Inside the oil cooler is a fine gauze filter. Over time, this can become blocked, restricting oil flow and causing engine oil temperatures to rise. Unfortunately, when this gauze blocks, the oil cooler usually needs to be replaced entirely, as no aftermarket supplier currently offers this component separately.
3. Oil and Coolant Mixing
A more serious failure occurs when the internal gasket fails, allowing diesel engine oil to mix with the cooling system. This can contaminate coolant, damage hoses, and create a much larger repair if not addressed early.
All three issues highlight why oil cooler quality is critical.
For capable DIY enthusiasts, there are limited options depending on the fault.
- The oil cooler gasket can be purchased separately for around $15, although it is not commonly supplied directly through Jeep
- If the issue is a blocked internal gauze, replacement of the entire oil cooler is usually required
- There are currently no reliable aftermarket solutions for the internal gauze component
While DIY repairs can work in specific cases, identifying the exact failure is crucial before attempting a fix.
There is a significant price difference between genuine and aftermarket oil coolers.
- Genuine Jeep oil cooler: approximately $2,000–$2,500 AUD
- Aftermarket alternatives: typically $130–$400 AUD
While the upfront cost of genuine parts is higher, they offer correct fitment, proven reliability, and manufacturer-backed warranties. From our perspective as a workshop, this allows us to confidently warranty the repair and protect the customer from the risk of repeat failures or engine damage.
