There are a number of reasons why a Wrangler engine could loose oil pressure or log fault codes for loss of oil pressure. Three individual faults are common for causing this.
The First is the Oil Pressure switch failing – We have covered that fault in an seperate article. You can read up on that one by clicking here.
The second is a fault introduced by a mechanic after replacing the cylinder heads or head gaskets. You can read up about this by clicking here.
The next possible cause for this is the failure of the oil pump itself.
Most commonly the pump has not actually failed but rather the electrical solenoid connected to the pump has failed.
The solenoid can get stuck. It is totally up to chance as to if this fails int he open or closed position. It hardly matters, when it fails the engine will log fault code.
The solenoid has been designed in such a way that it can be removed off the oil pump and replaced separately however Jeep do does not sell the solenoid seperate to the pump. So whilst you can replace just the solenoid you will have to buy the compete pump.
After market solenoids may be a possibility saving some coin however at the time of writing this, we have only ever fitted the Genuine Jeep pump.
To replace it the engine sump has to be removed and the lower timing chain and oil pump gear removed. These are not timed to the main timing chains so there is no need to remove the front timing cover.
This does make the replacement of the pump a little easier however its still a significant job to carry out.
