CP4 Fuel Pump Timing For EcoDiesel Engines

We recently had a customer come into the workshop that wanted verification his Z46 recall had been done properly due to slightly worse fuel economy, while there is no way of checking its been timed previously we took it off and ensured it was correct.

Here’s a breakdown of the correct process straight from stellantis themselves, some people and even dealerships believe this is a nonsense procedure.

Check out the video below and at the end of the blog We will provide all the photos of the actual Repair data

Step 1: Crankshaft Position – 60° After TDC

Before touching cam or pump timing:

  • Disconnect battery
  • Remove vibration damper cover
  • Rotate engine until the crankshaft is positioned 60° ATDC

This is verified via the crank reluctor wheel and camshaft position sensor alignment. If this step is wrong, everything downstream will be wrong.

A crank locking tool is then installed to ensure the engine is properly indexed and cannot move.

No guessing. No eyeballing.

Step 2: Camshaft Alignment

With the crank locked at 60° ATDC:

  • Intake gear timing mark should be at 4 o’clock
  • Exhaust gear timing mark should be at 8 o’clock
  • Install left and right camshaft timing tools
  • Ensure locking pins align correctly

If the pins don’t line up, the cam timing is off. Simple as that.

Step 3: Injection Pump Base Timing

With the engine correctly timed:

  1. Mark the pump gear and housing as a reference.
  2. Align a commercially available degree wheel to zero with the centre line on the fuel quantity solenoid.
  3. Rotate the pump gear counterclockwise until the index mark aligns at –65°.

That 65° reference is critical for correct base fuel delivery.

If you’re replacing the injection pump, you must follow the fuel system removal and installation procedure correctly. Skipping that step will cost you in drivability and fuel economy.

Step 4: Reassembly & Final Checks

Once timing is verified:

  • Install injection pump cover
  • Secure vacuum lines and clamps
  • Reconnect fuel supply and return lines
  • Reconnect electrical connectors
  • Reconnect battery
  • Start engine and check for leaks

Then and only then do you verify correct operation.

If you own one of these EcoDiesel’s and want to understand what’s actually causing your worsened fuel economy it’s worth the watch.

If you need your EcoDiesel HPFP timing done properly, you know where to find us.
