If you own a JK Wrangler, this is something you need to know.
Unlike most vehicles that run rear disc brakes with internal handbrake shoes, the JK Wrangler does things a bit differently. There’s no adjustment at the handbrake lever. That means you can’t just tighten the cable from inside the car when it starts to stretch, which is what a lot of people expect.
If your handbrake is sitting too high or not holding properly, the first place to start is the handbrake shoes inside the rear discs. Adjust them like you would on a typical setup. In a lot of cases, that’s enough to bring it back to where it should be.
But if you’ve adjusted the shoes and the lever is still coming up too high, the issue is in the cables. Over time, they stretch, and because there’s no adjustment at the lever, there’s no way to take up that slack. At that point, replacement is the only proper fix.
The good news is the cables themselves are relatively inexpensive, usually under $200 per cable. It’s worth sticking with genuine parts here, as the cheaper alternatives don’t tend to last or perform the same.
No adjustment at the lever means once the cables stretch, that’s it. Replacement is the solution.
If your Wrangler handbrake isn’t doing its job, this is where you should be looking first.
