There are only three main reasons we see a Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 need to be towed to us. Ther are obviously some outliers to this data but based on what we see in our workshop week on week there are only three main reasons for these cars to leave you completely abandoned on the side of the road.
- Tone Wheel failure: This little ring is located on the back of the crank shaft and is what the crank angle sensor uses as a reference point to tell the ECU Where the engine is at in its rotation. This wheel delaminates and the car either wont start or in many cases wont turn off.
We have covered this fault in depth and you can find out more about it by clicking the link below.

Additionally there are differing part numbers for the series one and two. If you are doing this repair, be sure to get the correct part.

2. Cooling system issues: The weak point for the Diesels particularly is the Cooling system problems. The diesel is known for the hose in the valley failing along with some thermostat issues and other leaks. The easiest way to avoid this failure is to get carried out what we refer to as the four hose package. Fix the cooling system up and this should give you trouble free motoring.
3. Big end bearing failure: The WK2 Diesel does have a semi common occurrence with big end bearing failure. It is our believe this is predominantly caused in cases with towing and the 8 speed automatic transmission.
