Jeep Cherokee Recall 49A – The Problem That Could Burn Your House Down

Jeep Cherokee owners across Australia need to know about recall 49A that affects their vehicles. This involves the electrically powered liftgate module and large cracks forming between the seams at the rear of your KL Cherokee. The concern is an internal short circuit that could start a vehicle fire even when the ignition is off.

When Was the Recall Issued

In the United States, notification letters began being sent to owners by June 30 2023 and the recall was estimated to launch in the second quarter of 2023. In Australia, recall number REC-005956 (campaign 49A) was officially published on April 29 2024 Vehicle Recalls.

This recall covers Jeep KL Cherokee vehicles made between February 27 2013 and September 9 2015.

What Goes Wrong

Water can get into the power liftgate module causing corrosion in electrical connectors. That corrosion can lead to a short circuit that may then cause a fire whether the vehicle ignition is on or off

The repair plan involves relocating the liftgate control module and adding a plastic water shield to divert water away, and inspecting all electrical connectors. If any connectors show corrosion they will be replaced.

The repair typically takes between 90 minutes and 3 hours. This does not however include fixing how the water entered the vehicle initially.

Interim Safety Advice

While you are waiting for the recall fix, it is advised to park your vehicle outdoors and away from structures or other vehicles.

Some owners have shared that removing the fuse for the liftgate module can help as an interim measure. It disables the module and reduces risk from water intrusion until the repair is done.

What Australian Owners Should Do

If you own a 2013 to 2015 Jeep KL Cherokee:

  1. Visit the Australian Government recall site (Vehicle Recalls) and check recall number REC-005956 using your vehicle VIN to confirm if your vehicle is affected.
  2. You can also enter your VIN on the Jeep Australia recall page to check your vehicle’s status.
  3. If your vehicle is affected, contact your nearest authorised Jeep dealership and arrange to have the liftgate module inspected and repaired at no cost.
  4. In the meantime avoid parking indoors, especially near flammable materials, until the repair is completed.

Doing the recall repair promptly helps prevent the risk of fire and ensures the vehicle is safe to drive for the long term.
