Fill For Life Oils Explained

Dannie Explains the term Fill For Life.

Many Modern vehicles have fluids that are termed “Fill for life”. These oils are often used in components such as

  • Power steering systems
  • Transmissions
  • Differentials
  • Transfer cases

Many consumers believe (and it’s fair enough) that because of the term “fill for life”. They never require changing. Unfortunately the term is rather misleading. The “Life” in question is actually only the dealership service life. That is to say the life span in question if from the date up manufacture up to the the point in time where the dealer is no longer responsible for the maintenance of the vehicle (usually just after warranty expires). In most cases the vehicle would have only traveled somewhere between fifty thousand kilometres and one hundred thousand.

For most vehicles this is less than half the actual life span of the vehicle.

Oils in all cases are used to do three things.

  • Lubricate
  • Cool
  • Clean

Over time as the oil does these three tasks it breaks down and deteriorates, eventually making it no longer suitable and requiring replacement.

The Point, No oil is truely ‘Filled of Life” there is no oil that will never ever require replacement.
