Does a car yard have to give you a Warranty with your new car?
The short answer here is Yes and No. Not very helpful i know. There are some rules and regulations around this that you as the consumer needs to understand before going into a contract with any used car yard.
The dealer does NOT have to offer Warranty if either of the two conditions apply.
The vehicle is more then ten years old
The vehicle has more then 100,000kms on it
If either of those conditions are met the dealer does not have to give you a warranty.However if both these conditions are not in play the dealer or yard does have to provide you with a warranty. These warranties are normally not the manufacturers warranty and are provided by a third party. These Warranties are normally not worth the paper they are written on.
Most of these aftermarket warranties only cover a small amount of parts, to the value of a second hand replacement part and rarely pay out.
In my twenties years in the industry i have seen once this company pay out for a second hand starter motor from a wreaking yard. A part values at about $80. Hardly worth the effort.
