Chrysler Recalls Over 320,000 Jeeps Over Battery Fire Risk in the US

Chrysler has issued a major recall involving more than 320,000 Jeep plug in hybrid SUVs due to a potential risk of high voltage battery failure that could lead to a fire.

According to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects approximately 228,221 Jeep Wranglers (model years 2020–2025) and 91,844 Jeep Grand Cherokees (model years 2022–2026). It’s estimated that around 5 percent of the affected vehicles could contain the defect.

Owners of these vehicles are advised to park outdoors, away from structures, and not to charge their vehicles until the remedy is complete. Chrysler, a subsidiary of Stellantis, has confirmed 19 reported incidents and one injury related to this issue so far.

What’s Causing the Recall

The problem stems from certain battery packs with cells that may suffer separator damage, potentially leading to a thermal event, in other words, a fire risk. The issue affects Wrangler 4xe models built between July 2020 and August 2024, and Grand Cherokee 4xe models assembled from July 2021 through mid October 2024.

Chrysler is currently developing a technical fix, though no official repair timeline has been announced. Interim notification letters will be mailed to owners by December 2, with follow-up letters to come once a permanent solution is ready. US Owners can check if their vehicle is affected on the NHTSA website starting November 6. its unclear whether we will get this recall in Australia as of yet

This recall comes at a critical time for Stellantis, which has been working to rebuild its North American operations after years of sluggish performance. The company has been regaining momentum, with CEO Antonio Filosa committing roughly $13 billion in US investments to strengthen domestic manufacturing.

While the recall poses a short term challenge, Stellantis’ renewed focus on improving quality and expanding its presence in North America could help stabilize long-term growth.
