If your Jeep won’t start and you’re seeing a ‘Service Vehicle Protection System’ message on the dash, you’re not alone. This is a common issue in certain Jeep models, and it can leave you stranded without warning.
At GDL Automotive, we’ve seen this problem pop up repeatedly, and it almost always traces back to the steering column lock module, a critical part of the vehicle’s anti-theft system.
When the steering column lock module fails, it prevents the ignition system from activating, even if the key fob is present. This triggers the Service Vehicle Protection System warning and completely disables the start function.
While the failure is electrical in nature, the module is also mechanically locked in place, which means even towing it to a workshop can be a hassle.
Temporary Fix to Get Your Jeep Moving Again
In the video, we walk through a temporary workaround that can help you start the vehicle and drive it until a permanent fix is completed. Here’s a simplified version of the steps:
Tools Needed:
- Torx screwdriver
- Chisel
- Hammer
Temporary Bypass Steps:
- Remove the Steering Column Cover
Use a Torx screwdriver to carefully take off the plastic shroud around the steering column. - Access the Anti-Theft Shear Bolts
These bolts are designed to prevent tampering but can be removed with a chisel and hammer. Tap them loose carefully. - Manipulate the Steering Lock Module
With the bolts out, leave the module plugged in, but gently manipulate it out of the locked position.
This will trick the system into allowing the engine to start.
This is only a temporary solution. We do not recommend relying on it long term. It should only be used to get the vehicle to a qualified workshop.

Cost of Permanent Repairs
To properly fix the issue, the steering column lock module must be replaced and reprogrammed. The typical cost is:
- $900 AUD (approximate, including parts and programming)
- Programming must be completed by a Jeep dealership or us
At GDL Automotive, we can assist with diagnosis, part sourcing, and arrange for programming as part of the repair.
What You Can Do to Prepare
If you’re a Jeep owner, particularly with a WK2 Grand Cherokee or similar models, it’s worth keeping a few tools in the vehicle in case this fault strikes when you’re away from home:
- Small Torx set
- Chisel and hammer
- Basic toolkit
Being prepared could mean the difference between being stuck or getting to a repair shop.
The Service Vehicle Protection System warning is frustrating and can strike without warning but understanding the cause (usually a faulty steering column lock module) and knowing how to temporarily bypass the fault can get you out of a jam.
For a proper diagnosis and permanent repair, bring your Jeep to the experts at GDL Automotive. We don’t guess, we fix the real problem.
