Ram Set to Expand Beyond Pick Ups: First SUV Slated for 2028 Launch

The lines between brands under the Stellantis umbrella are about to blur even more, with Ram preparing to step into SUV territory for the very first time. Known for its tough and dependable pick-ups, Ram is now set to broaden its horizons and take on a new segment.

Stellantis confirmed the expansion as part of a $US13 billion ($AU19.8 billion) investment into its U.S. operations. The new Ram SUV is expected to launch in 2028, marking a major shift for the brand as it moves beyond its traditional line-up of utes and workhorses.

While Ram has built its image around strength, utility and capability, this move mirrors the strategy of General Motors’ GMC division, a brand that markets itself as “professional grade” while successfully balancing both pick-ups and SUVs in its range.

Details about Ram’s upcoming SUV remain tightly under wraps. Stellantis hasn’t confirmed its size or where it will sit in the market, but it has revealed that two powertrains are in development: a petrol-only option and a range-extender hybrid.

Currently, Stellantis’ U.S. lineup has clear divisions, with Jeep handling SUVs, Ram focusing on pick-ups, Dodge covering performance vehicles and Chrysler managing people movers. However, there’s already some overlap, with the Jeep Gladiator encroaching on Ram’s space and the Dodge Durango competing with Jeep’s larger SUV offerings.

This new Ram SUV will take that crossover even further. It’s set to be built at Stellantis’ Warren, Michigan factory, the same plant responsible for the Jeep Wagoneer, a full-size three-row SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis derived from the Ram 1500.

It’s not yet confirmed whether Ram’s SUV will share its underpinnings with the Wagoneer, but the connection seems likely. The Grand Wagoneer is also due for an update in 2026, including a range-extender plug-in hybrid variant, which could set the stage for Ram’s entry into electrified SUVs.

Adding another piece to the puzzle, a new Dodge Durango is scheduled for release in 2029, which could share development with the Ram SUV to help spread costs across multiple models.

Either way, this marks a significant evolution for Ram. By 2028, the brand won’t just be known for its powerful pick-ups. It will also be competing in the SUV space, offering something fresh for drivers who want capability, comfort and toughness all in one package.
