Nationwide Changes
Mobile Phone Detection Goes High-Tech
AI-powered cameras will be watching. These new surveillance tools can detect if you’re touching or holding your phone while driving.
Penalty: Up to $1209 fine + 5 demerit points
State-by-State Breakdown
NSW
- Seatbelt Detection Now Active
Cameras can now also fine you for not wearing your seatbelt properly. - Average Speed Cameras for All
Light vehicles (cars, bikes) will be monitored across longer distances. - Paperless Fines Phased Out
No more surprise fines in the mail — you’ll be notified in person or electronically.

QLD
- Fines & Rego Costs Increase
No more freeze. Expect over 3% increase across the board. - New 40km/h Zones
Parts of Hervey Bay Esplanade and busy urban areas drop from 50km/h to 40km/h.
VIC
- Slow Down for Roadside Workers
Must now slow to 40km/h for tow trucks, roadside assistance, and incident response vehicles with lights or alarms — even on freeways.
Fine: Up to $961, no points lost.

SA
- Stricter Speed Rule for Stationary Vehicles
Must slow to 25km/h when passing any emergency or breakdown vehicles with flashing lights on multi-lane roads.
Penalty: Up to $1648 + 7 demerit points
WA
- Heavier Penalties Across the Board
- Mobile phone use: Up to $700 + 5 points
- Extreme speeding: Over $1600
- New Speed Limits
- Major urban roads (previously 70–110km/h) drop to 60km/h
- High pedestrian zones like Augusta town centre will be 40km/h
