Electric Toyota HiLux: Production Confirmed

Toyota has confirmed that it will start manufacturing an electric version of its popular Hilux ute by the end of 2025. This move marks a significant step in Toyota’s commitment to sustainable transportation, and there is a strong possibility that the electric Hilux will make its way to Australian shores.

Toyota’s announcement comes less than two months after unveiling the battery-powered Hilux Revo BEV concept in Australia. According to Reuters, Toyota Motors Asia Executive Vice President Pras Ganesh stated that production will take place in Thailand, primarily targeting the local market. However, the company is also considering export options, which could include Australia. This development follows early access given to Australian engineers for the Hilux Revo in late 2023, indicating a potential market for the electric Hilux down under.

The electric Hilux, initially introduced as the Hilux Revo BEV concept, has been undergoing trials in Thailand. Currently, about a dozen pre-production single-cab, short-range versions are being tested to ensure reliability and performance. While the single-cab configuration is confirmed, it remains uncertain whether a dual-cab variant will be produced.

Australia’s market for utes is robust, with the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Isuzu D-Max topping sales charts. All three models are manufactured in Thailand, making the prospect of an electric Hilux in Australia a logical extension. If introduced, the electric Hilux would cater to both the country’s strong demand for utes and the growing preference for environmentally friendly vehicles.

As we approach the late 2025 production start date, more details about the electric Hilux’s specifications, performance, and availability are expected to emerge. For now, the confirmation of its production and potential export signifies a major milestone for Toyota and a promising development for ute fans and eco-conscious consumers in Australia and beyond.

Stay tuned for further updates on the electric Toyota Hilux and its journey from concept to a market-ready vehicle. The future of utes is electric, and Toyota is leading the charge.
