Jeep Grand Cherokee Recalled for Fire Risk. Impact on Australian Models Uncertain

Jeep has issued a recall for over 150,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the US due to a significant fire risk, with the Grand Cherokee 4xe being one of the affected models. The recall also involves the popular Wrangler 4xe, though it is not sold in Australia. Affected vehicles in the US are advised to be parked outside, away from structures and other vehicles, due to the potential for fires to occur while the vehicles are either parked or being driven.

The issue stems from a high-voltage battery fault, which has already led to two reported injuries. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published a notice warning owners not to charge their vehicles if they have not been repaired. The risk of fire is higher when the battery is charged, and the danger is reduced when the battery is depleted. While the recall in the US is clear, the impact on Australian Grand Cherokee 4xe owners remains uncertain. gdl has reached out to Jeep Australia for clarification on whether Australian models are affected and if a recall is expected locally.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe, a niche PHEV model in Australia, accounted for only 4.9% of Jeep Grand Cherokee sales in the first half of 2024, with just 17 units sold. In comparison, it was outsold by rival luxury PHEV SUVs such as the Range Rover Velar (20 units), Land Rover Defender (34 units), and BMW X5 (45 units).

In the US, Jeep dealers will address the issue by updating the battery pack control module software. In some cases, the high-voltage battery may even be replaced. It remains to be seen if Australian owners will face similar recall measures. Keep an eye on official updates from Jeep Australia to know if any actions are necessary to ensure the safety of your vehicle.
